You're in luck, Deehem wrote some guides on the Wiki a couple of days ago

Minecraft/FTP - Multiplay Wiki - General FAQ of FTP
Minecraft/FTP Uploads - Multiplay Wiki - FTP Tutorial

Ask if you're unsure of anything else.

Yes. FTP is entirely user-run, it's not the simple ClanForge system that we offer normally. We also can't support modifications to the server code, so if you experience errors it's on you.

Just did a quick search, you can do it but it's quite complicated, you'll need to install ItemCraft and follow the instructions further on down the page on how to make it work. Their are a few downsides to this, first been that all your players would need to have the client mods installed along with a modified version of ModLoader, which requires quite a lot of work and coordination between you and your players to make sure everything works. If you want to give it a go, it's possible with FTP access but it's not worth the effort in my opinion.

Do take note of what's on the FAQ and what Wahrheit said, you won't be able to get the level of support you normally do with this level of modification.

Right I've used the FTP to install mod loader and a Mod that needs mod loader but when I try and make the blocks that the mod added they show up for a few seconds before it stops and moves the block back to the craft square.
    Any suggestions?
